Twenty-twenty: need I go on? What’s happened this year is not without cause or even new yet has us all reeling as if we’ve just woke up on the first day of high school. You know exactly what feeling I mean. THE STANDARDS HAVE NEVER BEEN LOWER, meanwhile, every decision carries the weight of our entire future — and we’re deciding it all within the excruciating loss of community, of place, of home.

Home is a four-letter word in its emotional, often polarizing power. Distance from it will steal and gift more than we could ever imagine; forced union with it leaves us grappling with an entirely new type of turmoil. We can exhaust ourselves fighting or we can embrace the extraordinary fertility of this peculiar crisis.

Please join us in creating the first edition of REMOTE: a digital magazine exploring the concept of being at or away from home or community, by people who have or do live away from whatever home is to them.

We hope this theme presents you with abundant possibility. Does home exist? For everyone? Is it static? Are those who possess it lucky or the opposite? Do we respect it like a trophy on a shelf, beckoning a past life? Is it relevant to our present moment? What is it without community? What even is place without community? Do we owe our community something – do we owe it everything?

Your work doesn’t need to explicitly reference home but it should tie into that greater theme.
